Top Ten Ways to Keep an Art Healthy Home

In the scheme of things the idea that the art in your home must be healthy is a small one; what with composting, recycling and public transportation making a bigger impact. However, art does have an impact on the environment and one of the most pressing issues is “air quality”. Listed below are 10 ways you can keep an art healthy home.

1. Buy fine art prints printed with no-voc inks. (volatile organic compounds). Here is one by George Oze titled: Boat on Tropical Beach in gorgeous Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Going green can be beautiful!
2. When custom framing, ask your framer to use glass instead of Plexi. An acrylic shield has off-gassing but glass is clean; and less expensive.
3. Purchase fine art reproductions that have been printed on 100% cotton papers from post industrial recycled cotton fibers. This haunting piece by Scott Belding is another example of green printing. Dance Photo 8.
4. Keep paintings made from acrylic and oils away from points of direct inhalation or ingestions. Paint can flake over time.
5. Be cautious with art around children and adults with respiratory problems or chemical sensitivities.
6. If possible, ask your custom framer to use frame molding that is Forest Stewardship Council certified.
7. Ask for mat board that is also Forest Stewardship Council certified.
8. Ask your framer about mounting your art with biodegradable adhesives on bio-based biodegradable foam core.
9. Purchase original art from local artists. This way your carbon footprint is a small one as the distance between the artist and you is much less.
10. Use non-ammonia based cleaners when cleaning the glass. A mix of vinegar and water in a spray bottle is always a good one. Remember to spray the microfiber cloth first and not the glass.
By following these steps you can insure that the items you use to beautify your home or office will be a positive addition to your home.

This weekend is the Dwell on Design Show. Wish I could be there! But since I can't I have been checking out the shops and web sites that are listed in the Dwell supplement. Where do I start?? Ok - first we have A+R in Venice. Offering exclusive and uncommon home and personal accessories. I really love the idea of uncommon. Shouldn't your dwelling be uncommon?Let's move on to Plastica. I was a little concerned about the name, I don't care for plastic - but this place sounds fun. The owners hand-select each item and the items are functional. They look and do something. How cool is that!Moving on to books. One of my favorite things. Skylight Books is a cozy contemporary bookstore in the Los Feliz neighborhood of LA focusing on design, art, photography, film, theatre, fashion and graphic literature.I'm going on a virtual tour now. The Color Marketing Group released its top colors for 2009. So here goes:

Purple- hmmm.......ok. Grayed our violet, red, plum purples (ok that's good) and blue inspired fuchsia. The piece on the right by Tandi Venter has smoky purple tones...perfect for neutrals that don't want beige.

Blue: The New Green - no surprise here. Blue and any variation thereof is all over! Skyblue, blue green, aqua....it's society's commitment to eco-consciousness.

Yellow: bright vivid and much more then an accent. Buttery, creamy yellows with a hint of spice.

Bright accents from India, China and Turkey: nice to know those lovely spicy tones of the past two years are staying live. Add a touch of turquoise and teal and you've got the look.

white: yes - it's been popular in custom frames and now it's trending into practical finishes. In fact we just added bright white trim to our new black bathroom and finished it with a glossy white resin deer head. OMG - so fun!

Lisa Dean has lived in Austin for 15 years and worked in the vintage business for more than a decade. The popularity in dogs and cats never ends. I'm always fascinated by how different each one can be rendered but still captures the charm and personality of each animal. Yesterday I added a collection of dog silhouettes creatively rendered by Soraya Chemaly. This is from the Artaissance Collection which I add to weekly.
